Ask anyone to define what a “good job” means to them and you’d probably hear many similar answers – good salary, health benefits, days of leave etc. However, what actually defines a good job for many usually moves beyond the tangibles of what’s stated in your employment contract. Here are some things that we think really makes a job “good”.
- The money
Okay, so we just said that having a good job shouldn’t be about the material benefits – but realistically, we must acknowledge that how much you earn in a job is important. One could argue that no matter how much you love your job, if you’re not being paid enough for it, you’d probably find yourself losing interest after a while. At the end of the day, it’s important that you’re being remunerated at a level that allows you to lead a comfortable life.
- The boss
This is a little mentioned and underrated issue in all jobs – what are your bosses like? Are they willing and able to listen to their subordinates on the ground, take feedback and make improvements? Or are they set in their ways, dismissive and indifferent to employee morale? They say that “people don’t quit their jobs, they quit their bosses.” As such, it’s vital to ensure that your job has good bosses that are able to listen to their employees and meet their needs.
- The training
At the end of the day, no one is looking to stay at one company their entire working life . Therefore, it’s important to ensure that you gain skills on the job that will make you more sought after in the future. If you’re feeling bored and unchallenged at your work, it’s usually a good sign that you’ve exhausted what your current job has to offer you, and it’s time to move on.
- The progression
It’s also important to know whether your job offers you opportunities for advancement. A company with a good progression plan shows its employees that they can benefit from the company if they do well. On the other hand, a company with poor progression can result in poor morale from employees who feel that they have nothing to work towards.
Though it’s difficult to find the perfect job, having a job that ticks these 4 points will ensure that you are having a job that works for you.
